You are probably wondering what #20baketeen is, first off. One of my dear friends/co-workers coined the term to me, because he was determined to eat cake every day this year. While I won't be participating in that version of #20baketeen, it did inspire me to bake more often, and to grow my skills as a home/amateur baker. Now, when I say amateur, I mean amateur. I grew up using box cake mix and store bought everything, from icing and frostings to fillings.
I didn't really get into baking from scratch until I met my friend Margeaux, who loves to bake and create from scratch. She invited a few of us over one time and showed us all how to make cookies from scratch, and since then, I've been trying out different recipes here and there.
One day, watching one of the many reality baking competition shows that I love and binge-watch like crazy, I thought, "I want to make macarons." I always felt like making a macaron felt a little out of reach, as in I would never have the skills and know how to figure it out. I just hopped onto Amazon, and after a bit of diving into reviews, I found "Secrets of Macarons" by Jose Marechal, and decided to go for it.
This book, while small in size, is packed full of super useful information for each ingredient you'll be working with, along with pictures as a guide. I read it over and over again while I was following alongside the instructions until it stuck, and I really appreciate how much it breaks down every ingredient and every step of the process.
So after this long-winded explanation, this basically is what led me to start this blog. I want to capture my attempt at #20baketeen, and I want to share it to not just my lucky family/friends/co-workers, who will be trying my bakes, but to just blog it out there to the world. I'm trying to get a few of my friends involved in this venture as well, so hopefully I can feature some of their bakes on here as well. Unfortunately I didn't decide to do this until after baking a few more things, so there is a bit of a lack of photos for maybe the first couple of posts, but I promise I will do better going forward!
Cheers to us saving the world, one bake at a time!
